And what did we learn this time …

Image
So we are home again from India and drawing this fabulous adventure to a close, apart from producing our photo album! The bags are unpacked, the washing is done and tomorrow we head back to normal life! And now it is time to sit back and reflect on our journey … our highlights, the must sees and must do’s and the things we learnt from visiting India. 1. India is a captivating country. The sights, sounds, feel and smell of India are very real. The smoggy air places a haze over the cities which can seem depressing, but it is the reality for India and something you come to expect and accept. When you leave the cities the air is clearer and crisper. The temples, palaces and forts are beautiful, intricate and filled with history. Marble is cold to touch, running your hand over the carved latticework and thinking about the craftsmen who made it hundreds of years ago reminds you that in a world of automation we need to treasure our artisans. The long drive ...

Today was our last day in India. There would be no monuments, temples, forts or palaces. Instead we would make the long trek from Jaipur back to Delhi. There would be plenty of things to see along the way but apart from "washroom" breaks we were heading straight through.  Yash told us we didn't need to leave super early as we had a late flight out. Then it was farewell Jaipur and onto the highway towards Delhi. After about an hour or so of driving Yash received a call from his head office to let him know that there was a major accident on the road we were travelling on and they were anticipating a 2 hr delay. His office advised him and Rajan to turn around and take a bypass road to a...

Exploring the Pink City …

Image
Today we had the opportunity to explore Jaipur with Yash. We began our day with a slower start, which was a good thing after Ian’s middle of the night online meeting. We went to breakfast in the hotel opting for simpler fare of just toast and some danishes and donuts (hey we are on holiday) following our large meal out last night. We then wandered up to meet Yash and Rajan so we could head off to discover new things to make us say “wow”! We headed first to Old Jaipur and the gated pink City filled with small shops in a bustling road, all painted pink, before arriving at Hawa Mahal, which is also known as the Palace of the Winds. Built in 1799 its  five-floor exterior looks like a honeycomb with its 953 small windows called  Jharokhas  d ecorated with intricate latticework.  The original intent of the lattice design was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life and festivals celebrated in the street below without being seen.  We then drove on to the Amber Fo...
